Why Access Matters

In 2022 - 5.5 million people in Australia (21.4%) were living with a disability; Despite advancements in various sectors, people with disabilities continue to face significant challenges in accessing the built environment. Common difficulties reported include; Moving within buildings, Approaching buildings, and Access carparks.

Everyday Challenges

Among people with disabilities aged 15 years and over (living in households), the impact of these accessibility issues is profound. In 2022:

  • Over one-third (34.7%) avoided situations because of their disability in the previous 12 months. Common situations avoided were:
    • Visiting family and friends
    • Visiting restaurants, cafes, or bars (37.4%)
    • Going to shops, banks, etc. (35.8%)

The Importance of Accessibility

In summary, people with disabilities in Australia today still have difficulty accessing the built environment and participating in everyday activities outside of the home. This includes simple pleasures like having a coffee with a friend at the local cafe or completing their shopping at the supermarket.
