Interactive Access Map Makes Open House Melbourne More Inclusive.

As part of a major new accessibility initiative for Open House Melbourne (OHM), Architecture & Access, in collaboration with OHM, has developed an Access Map—a purpose-built digital tool designed to make the weekend more inclusive and accessible for all.
Tract and Maptivate created the map, combining beautiful artwork with a powerful digital platform. Tract contributed their expertise in urban design and visual storytelling, while Maptivate provided the interactive platform that brought the map to life. The result is a crafted, user-friendly tool that allows people to explore Open House programs with confidence and ease.
Architecture & Access worked closely with OHM and participating sites to gather and present detailed accessibility information. The map clearly indicated whether venues offered accessible toilets, car parking, sensory rooms, and step-free access throughout buildings. These features were clearly marked on the map, helping users make informed decisions about which sites to visit and how to navigate their day.
For people with disability, carers, and anyone with access needs, the Access Map proved to be a powerful planning tool. It not only supported individual journeys but also served as an educational resource for building owners and operators, encouraging them to consider and improve the accessibility of their spaces.
The map was available across both mobile and desktop platforms and received an enthusiastic response, with over 50,000 views and an average session duration of 2.45 minutes. This level of engagement highlights the growing demand for inclusive design and the importance of accessible public events.
Beyond its practical function, the Access Map also reflects OHM’s commitment to equity and inclusion. It showcases mobility-friendly and neurodiverse-considerate sites, helping to ensure that everyone can participate in the celebration of architecture, culture, and community across Melbourne.

Architecture & Access is delighted to have contributed to this initiative and looks forward to continuing its partnership with Open House Melbourne in 2026. Plans are already underway to further develop the Access Map, expanding its reach and functionality to ensure even more people can experience the city with confidence and dignity.
