In November 2024, the Federal Government released an amendment to the Disability (Access to Premises — Buildings) Standards 2010 (Premises Standards) (DAPS).
The Amendment Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Amendment (2024 Measures No. 1) Standards 2024, references Australian Standard 1428.1: 2021.
The DAPS provides clarity to design professionals, building owners and certifiers ensuring that they are building buildings in line with the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) (Cth), that do not discriminate against people with a disability.
AS1428.1: 2021 Design for access and mobility, Part 1: General requirements for access – New building work, was updated to address minor errors and improve the clarification of some clauses from the previous 2009 edition.

The change represents progress and will provide clarification to many clauses, for example, the circulation space for ambulant toilet cubicle and air-lock doors.
Architecture & Access support this update and the progression towards improving access to the building environment for all users, especially for people with a disability.
As the National Construction Code 2022 still references AS1428.1:2009 there may be some confusion about which standard should be adopted. Architecture & Access are abreast of the updates from the Australian Building Codes Board and can unpack and explain these in an hour long CPD session that we offer to our clients.
Please contact Architecture & Access to discuss these changes or to book a CPD session where we will be covering the changes to AS1428.1:2021.
