Why Accessibility Matters at Events
Accessible events create welcoming environments where everyone can participate with dignity, independence and confidence. When accessibility is built into the event planning process, the needs of our diverse community are acknowledged and addressed – inclusive of people with disability or injury, older people, families, neurodivergent people, and people with hidden disabilities.

Legal Compliance (DDA, Premises Standards, NCC)
Our work aligns with key legislative benchmarks, including the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) (1992), the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards (2010), and the National Construction Code (NCC). There are specific legislative access requirements for events, whether they are in existing buildings or are held outdoors. Architecture & Access will help you navigate the legislation to ensure that compliance can be achieved.
We believe all event sites should achieve safe, dignified and equitable access for all people at the event to meet the spirit and intent of the DDA. The DDA makes it unlawful to discriminate against a person on the grounds of disability in a range of areas.
Review of documentation and site inspections identify access barriers, opportunities for improvement and any areas where exemptions may be appropriate. Where exemptions are proposed, they must be clearly justified, documented and accepted by the relevant building surveyor to ensure safety and compliance.

Site Layout
A well-planned site layout is fundamental to delivering an accessible event. Early review of site plans and event documentation helps to identify potential access issues before they become access barriers onsite.
Consideration of circulation routes, gradients, ground surfaces, wayfinding and viewing opportunities enable people with disability to navigate independently through the site. A pre-event site review can provide valuable direction for the optimal siting and orientation of structures and features, to maximise accessibility across the event footprint.
Temporary Structures
Structures such as stages, viewing platforms, grandstands, pop-up buildings, and modular stairs & ramps present unique access challenges. Reviewing design and construction documentation, combined with site inspections, can resolve access issues related to entry, internal circulation and safe movement to and within temporary structures.
Where full compliance with access benchmarks is impracticable due to the temporary nature of structures – or the location in which they are situated – alternative solutions must still demonstrate reasonable, functional and dignified access for the duration of the event. Architecture & Access have the skills and experience to provide this specialised guidance.
Temporary Structure Documentation Reviews
During the planning phase, early review of temporary structure documentation – such as stages, ramps, stairs, grandstand seating, multi-level activations, portable lifts, and viewing platforms — is undertaken to confirm they are safe, usable and aligned with relevant access benchmarks. It is far easier and cheaper to make changes to the design or selection of temporary structures in the planning phase than once the event has been installed. Where full compliance is not achievable, appropriate alternative solutions and documentation pathways can be identified.
