Changing Places Facility – Melbourne Airport

An internationally recognised facility in a major international airport

Changing Places provide suitable facilities for people who are unable to use standard accessible toilets. These facilities include an adult-sized change table, ceiling hoist, a peninsular toilet, privacy screen and additional circulation space to meet the needs of people with complex disabilities and their carers. They greatly improve the freedom, inclusion, and participation of people with severe disabilities by providing them dignity and choice.

Architecture & Access were engaged during the early design stage by the Peddle Thorp Architects team in 2020 to provide access consulting services for the new amenities blocks on behalf of the Airport Building Control, with these projects managed by Root Partnerships.

Within the Terminal 1 amenities upgrades is the inclusion of a Changing Place facility. This type of facility provides an enhanced level of access and serves to meet the requirements of people with high support needs and the support workers who assist them with their care. With the added inclusion of a shower, the provision of a Changing Places will provide great assistance to travellers with high support needs as well as the ability to travel with greater ease. These amenities are located adjacent to the check in area and are accessible to passengers travelling in the domestic terminal.

Hutchinson Builders were appointed as the builder of the new facilities within Terminal 1, with construction of the first Changing Places completed in April 2022. This facility, along with the male and female, all gender and parents’ facilities, are now open to the public. The Changing Places facility is a registered facility which can now be found on the Changing Places website.

This Changing Places facility is the first of four planned Changing Places facilities within Melbourne Airport domestic and international Terminals upgrade works.

Architecture & Access will continue to see through the development of the amenities upgrades within the different terminals during the design and construction stage, consulting with the project team to ensure accessible and inclusive amenities for all users are provided.

Melbourne Airport joins a list of other prominent Australian international airports with a registered Changing Places facility, including Adelaide, Brisbane & Sydney International Airports.
