A globally recognised contribution to neuro-inclusive design practice.
The Reset Room Design Guide, developed through a collaboration with Architecture & Access, Deakin University and Amaze, has been recognised with the Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Research Award from the UIA – International Union of Architects.
This award acknowledges evidence-based design research that makes a significant contribution to improving quality of life through advancing understanding of the enablers and barriers of using existing sensory/quiet rooms in Australian public buildings.
This international recognition highlights the value of bringing together lived experience, academic research and industry expertise to create environments that are genuinely neuro-inclusive. The guide provides a framework for designing sensory-supportive reset rooms that enable self-regulation and well-being. Practical strategies and ideas aim to equip architects, designers and facility managers with strategies to create inclusive environments.
The project was led by Cathryn Grant and the team at Architecture & Access, including Neuro-Inclusive Consultants Ellen Naismith and Dr Ilianna Ginnis. Cathryn travelled to Barcelona to accept the award on behalf of the project and the broader team whose expertise and commitment made the achievement possible.
The guide is the result of strong multidisciplinary partnership. We would like to acknowledge the valuable contributions of researchers Fiona Ransley and Angela Neyland from Amaze, along with Valerie Watchorn, Senior Lecturer at Deakin University. Their insights, research and collaboration were instrumental in developing a practical resource that supports more inclusive and supportive environments.
Receiving this award on the international stage reflects a growing global recognition of the importance of neuro-inclusion in the built environment and the positive impact thoughtfully designed spaces can have on people’s wellbeing, participation and sense of belonging.
