National Construction Code (NCC) 2022 Amendment No. 2: A Step Forward for Inclusive Design

This amendment is now released and effective.

Written by Cathryn Grant, Accessibility Leader – Victoria

The Australian Building Codes Board has released Amendment No. 2 to the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022.

The amendment aligns the NCC with the Disability (Access to premises – Buildings) Standards 2010 (Compilation No. 3), with both now referencing the updated Australian Standard AS 1428.1:2021 – Design for access and mobility – Part 1. General Requirements for Access – New Building Work.

The 2021 edition of the Australian Standard replaces the 2009 version. It addresses minor errors and explains key clauses to enhance usability and compliance.

Architecture & Access wholeheartedly support this update, as it is a positive move toward inclusive design by improving clarity and reducing ambiguities in the standard. This means improving access for all users – especially people with disability.

An example of clarification includes the requirement for a 900x900mm circulation space on the path of travel to ambulant cubicles.  The standard has clarified that only one of the circulation zones is required.  This was previously unclear from the figures and text in the 2009 revision of the standard.

This simple clarification makes it easier to understand the requirement and there is less ambiguity for the building industry.

If you would like to learn more about the changes in AS 1428.1:2021 we are running CPD sessions and can be held in your office, virtually (online) or you can come to us! Presentations are 60 minutes long including question time.

Upon completion of the CPD presentation you will be provided with a certificate of attendance.
