Architecture & Access is recognising World Spinal Cord Injury day – 5 September and headspace day – 8 October

Thanks to these organisations, individuals with spinal cord injuries and young people aged 12-25 who need mental health support can receive the assistance they need.

At times our unique working capacity enables us to donate our services to a number of community groups. We wanted to expand on this via a Workplace Giving program so that our staff could make regular donations through our payroll system, with the company matching the value of donations from our employees.

Since 2023 via Workplace Giving, we have been successfully supporting a number of specific disability organisations, these include; Asylum Seekers Refugee Centre, Disability Sports Australia, The Fred Hollows Foundation, Spinal Research Institute and Headspace. This article highlights the important work of two of these organisations.

Spinal Research Institute day – 5 September

Spinal cord injuries are a life-altering and significant health issue in Australia, affecting over 20,000 people and their families. Though medical research and technological advances have improved care and outcomes, there is an ongoing need to raise awareness about spinal cord injuries.

In Australia, around 380 people acquire a spinal cord injury annually. These injuries often result from road accidents, falls, sports injuries, or other traumatic events. The consequences can be catastrophic, leading to paralysis or impaired motor function that can drastically change an individual’s life and impose enormous emotional and financial costs on the affected families.

Spinal cord injury research is crucial for developing new treatments, improving care, and enhancing the quality of life for those living with these injuries. The Spinal Research Institute (SRI) is facilitating impactful research by providing resources and programs for research collaboration and knowledge sharing, and actively involving the spinal cord injury community in the research process.

The impacts of spinal cord injuries are profound and far-reaching, touching the lives of many Australians each year. Raising awareness about spinal cord injuries is vital in driving prevention, supporting research, enhancing medical care, and fostering social inclusion.
