Wollondilly Performing Arts Centre – A Spotlight in Scenic Picton

A Landmark for Inclusive Design and Cultural Vitality

Written by: Sarah McCarthy, Access Consultant

Opening in late 2024, the Wollondilly Performing Arts Centre (WPAC) in Picton, NSW, is set to become a cornerstone of regional arts and community engagement. Purpose-built to host a diverse range of events— from theatrical productions and live concerts to conferences and catered functions — the centre offers flexible seating for 200 to 500 patrons, ensuring adaptability for both intimate and large-scale gatherings.

Designed by the Melbourne-based firm Williams Ross Architects, the project benefited from working closely with Architecture & Access, who provided comprehensive access consulting from concept design through to construction stage. Their collaboration ensured not only compliance with mandatory accessibility standards but also the integration of universal design principles that enhance usability for all.

Visitors are welcomed by a landscaped entryway featuring garden-bordered pathways and a clearly defined entrance. Inside, a double-height glazed foyer creates a sense of openness and connection, complete with seating and a bar. A curved staircase leads to the first floor, complemented by lift access adjacent to the Box Office. Both the Bar and Box Office are equipped with accessible-height counters to facilitate transactions.

The interior layout prioritises movement and comfort, with wide pathways and generous circulation spaces designed to accommodate peak crowd flows. The performance space features retractable seating, allowing for integrated wheelchair spaces among loose seating. In the foyer, seating with armrests and backrests caters to patrons of all ages and mobility levels.

Backstage facilities reflect WPAC’s commitment to inclusivity, with change rooms and amenities designed to support performers of all abilities. Accessible bathrooms, showers, and ambulant options ensure that every artist is welcomed and accommodated.

As part of the first stage of the Wollondilly Community, Cultural and Civic Precinct, WPAC represents a transformative addition to the region. It offers a vibrant space for residents and visitors to gather, celebrate, and experience the arts—strengthening community ties and enriching the cultural landscape of Wollondilly.
